How to Rotate PDF Pages Online

2 min read

Half the pages face the wrong way, and every reader on earth will tilt their head instead of rotating the document. Sideways pages usually come from scanning equipment or phone photos that were captured in the wrong orientation — and fixing them takes seconds with a browser tool.

When a PDF needs rotating

  • Pages scanned with a sheet feeder that read documents sideways.
  • Phone photos of pages taken in landscape orientation.
  • Contracts where a signature block sits on a rotated page.
  • Presentations exported to PDF where slides alternate between orientations.
  • Booklets or landscape forms mixed into an otherwise portrait document.

Rotation in a PDF is display orientation: the page content is not redrawn or re-compressed, so rotating does not reduce quality. That also means a rotation applied to the wrong pages is simply an operation that needs undoing — work on a copy and keep the original safe.

Rotate pages step by step

  1. Open the rotate tool

Load the PDF Rotate tool and choose the file. It is processed locally in your browser.

  2. Pick the rotation angle

Choose 90°, 180° or 270°. Rotation is added to the page's current orientation, so press once and check — four 90° turns bring a page back to where it started.

  3. Decide which pages to rotate

Leave the page range empty to rotate the whole document, or enter a range such as 3-7 to touch only the sideways pages.

  4. Rotate and download

Press rotate and save the result. Open it and check the first page of every range you changed before you share the file.

When only some pages are sideways

Documents with mixed orientation need a targeted rotation. The reliable pattern:

  1. Skim the document and note which page numbers are wrong (remember, you are counting PDF pages, not printed page numbers).
  2. Enter exactly those pages as a range in the rotate tool and apply the angle.
  3. Open the result and confirm the targeted pages are now upright and nothing else moved.
  4. If a page needs the opposite direction, rotate it again with the complementary angle — 90° twice in either direction is 180°.

If the document is also disordered, fix orientation first, then reorder by extracting and re-assembling: How to merge PDF files for free covers the reassembly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Rotating the whole document when only three pages were wrong. Use the page range field — that is what it is for.
  • Counting printed numbers instead of PDF page positions. A document whose first printed page is 'Page 4' still starts at PDF page 1.
  • Rotating repeatedly instead of choosing 180°. Two 90° passes work, but 180° in one pass is easier to reason about.
  • Editing the only copy. Download the rotated version under a new name and keep the source untouched.
  • Forgetting the follow-up steps. After orientation is fixed, renumber with How to add page numbers to a PDF so the final document reads cleanly.

The short version

Open the file, choose 90, 180 or 270 degrees, restrict the change to the page range that needs it, and download. Rotation never touches image quality, so the only thing to get right is which pages you pointed it at.
